Tim Gennert Centres His Mixing Environment Around Prism Sound
The company’s Lyra 2 Audio Interface is giving this renowned producer and mastering engineer the accuracy he demands from pro audio equipment.
Cambridge, UK: February 18th 2018: When it comes to a digital device’s ability to translate upper harmonics and low end frequencies, musician and producer Tim Gennert says he has never heard anything as accurate as the Prism Sound Lyra 2 audio interface.
“Prism Sound’s Lyra 2 blew me away,” he says. “My listening experience was very pleasurable, and the Lyra 2 is now the centrepiece of my mixing environment.”
Tim Gennert Centres His Mixing Environment Around Prism Sound
Based in Northern California, Gennert’s career in pro audio spans more than 35 years and covers everything from music, radio, television and film to games and spoken word. Most of his work involves producing, mixing and mastering, but he is also a composer and songwriter. Alongside his own project studio, Gennert also has a close association with Prairie Sun Recording, a studio in Cotati, California where Tom Waits recorded his GRAMMY® winning albums Bone Machine and Mule Variations.
“I am addicted to space and dimension in the presentation of music because I think that when music has space, it allows the listener to feel more connected to the artist and the spirit of the music,” Gennert explains. “I am also fortunate to have access to the best audio gear in the world, so my baseline is very high, and I test everything I use very carefully.”
Prior to acquiring a Prism Sound Lyra 2, Gennert says he was looking for an audio interface that would allow him to unlock his mix down process from the sampling frequency of his DAW session. Lyra 2 enabled him to do this and he is delighted with the results.
“I love the way the Lyra 2 sounds,” he says. “It faithfully reproduces what comes out of my mixing console, better than anything else I have heard, and I am super particular. In my own studio I use it with an analogue summing bus that my friend Tim Beach makes at Woven Audio and a pair of Neve 1086 preamps, with everything going through the Lyra 2 into my mix down system. At Prairie Sun, I use it with either an SSL G Series or Neve 80 Series console for mix down.”
Recently Gennert used Lyra 2, in conjunction with Prairie Sun’s SSL G Series, to mix and master LoNero’s The Defiant Machine, which was named one of the most noteworthy albums of the last 50 years by Guitar Player magazine. He is also producing a new LoNero recording entitled Future Warrior and producing a Metal record inspired by the game Doom, with Andy Watters as executive producer.
Other projects include producing Jazz Fly 3, a musical story by children’s book author Matthew Gollub; producing the soundtrack for the film All Stars with composer Nolan Gasser and tackling support work on Nolan Gasser’s latest musical, which is based on the film Benny and Joon and is headed for Broadway.
“Alongside my Lyra 2, I’ve also been using a Maselec MEA-2 EQ to master Logan Magness’ vinyl album, Memphis on My Mind, which I’m mastering in association with Krieg Wunderlich,” Gennert says. “For me, good audio is about translating what is essential in human expression: the spirit and soul of music. To this end the Lyra 2 has become an invaluable tool.”
