Alan Silverman tests the Maselec MEA-2 and MLA-2
Cambridge, UK: Mastering engineer Alan Silverman has been trying out the Maselec MEA-2 mastering equalizer and the Maselec MLA-2 mastering compressor limiter in reviews for Pro-Sound Network (Pro Audio Review) and we're very proud of his conclusions.Alan Silverman is a two-time Grammy nominee in the Album Of The Year category for mastering and is based out of Arf! Mastering in New York. His track record covers Rock, Jazz, R&B, Folk, Film, and World music with credits on over 40 Grammy winning and nominated albums and numerous Emmy winning music television specials. Alan has mastered records charting on top-ten lists across the world.
Testing the Maselec MEA-2 mastering equalizer, he concludes: "This device, in my opinion, deserves its place alongside the most revered and respected mastering equalizers. It is truly a precision mastering equalizer in every sense. If the front panel says +.5 at 862 Hz, you will see exactly +.5 dB at 862 Hz on an accurate meter. The MEA2 is mastering-grade because there is virtually no audible loss of signal integrity due to noise, distortion or excessive phase shift. It is truly a universal equalizer in its ability to shape sound at will with versatility and finesse, without imposing a sound of its own."
Of the Maselec MLA-2 mastering compressor he is again effusive: "The MLA2 lives up to its moniker as a mastering-grade compressor. It offers impeccable specs, precision gain control, and compelling sound. The soft-blue lights under the VU meters add a nice visual touch and the heavyweight construction feels solid to the touch. Its performance is faster and more versatile than what is usual for an optically controlled compressor, yet it retains the smoothness and absence of distortion that are the hallmarks of classic optical devices. The MLA2 sounds fantastic and can do justice to a great mix.
