Jess Hill wins an Orpheus
I couldn't believe I had won - it felt brilliant!"
Jess Hill's reaction To Winning A Prism Sound Orpheus
When sound engineer Jess Hill spotted a competition in Tape Op magazine to win some Prism Sound recording equipment he decided to have a go on the basis that he could always use more and better gear. A few weeks later Hill learned that his spur of the moment decision had paid off. He had won an Orpheus Computer FireWire interface, which now has pride of place in his studio, Good Citizens Recordings.
Based in Austin, Texas, Good Citizen Recording is a small recording studio Hill and his business partner Adam Shell opened in its current location in 2005.
"It's been a growing project since 2001 or so," Hill explains. "It began with us recording demos for our own bands, then expanded when we started recording material for friends and other bands. Now we offer full recording and mixing services for bands, as well as post production work for films."
Good Citizen Recordings has a control room and a 400+ sq. ft. cutting room with a vaulted ceiling.
"We run a full digital setup in the control room with a handful of modified and custom built preamps and compressors," Hill says. "The Orpheus fits well into our set-up as we did a straight swap with our old FireWire interface. The most notable thing about the Orpheus is that it sounds fantastic. The sound is much closer to what you expect to hear from a digital converter. The surprising thing is you don't even know that you need that additional clarity until you plug in the Orpheus, then the clarity is completely obvious."
Although Hill hadn't used Prism Sound products before, he'd heard all about them and knew of their reputation for audio quality.
"I'm so excited to finally have one to use myself," he says. "Thank you, Prism Sound, for making such great products and for sharing them with me!"
