Glossary definition of 'Phase Locked Loop'

(PLL) A circuit for adjusting the frequency of an oscillator so that it is perfectly synchronised to another external oscillator. This is done by comparing the frequency and phase relationship between the two and adjusting the local oscillator until the phase difference between the two is fixed. The primary application in audio is for a digital receiver circuit that must lock to an external digital input carrier.
