Glossary definition of 'C-weighting'

A sound weighting filter that is largely flat with -3dB points at 31.5Hz and 8kHz, defined in IEC61672:2003.

Although not as common as A-weighting, many sound level meters and analyzers provide C-weighting. As a generalisation, A-weighting is more representative of the ear's sensitivity at low levels, while C-weighting provides better correlation at higher levels. In addition, it has become common to use C-weighting for setting up home-theatre systems.
